Sesame is the seed of the sesame plant, one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. It probably originated in Asia and is still an important ingredient in many Asian and oriental dishes. Sesame has a fat content of 50% and a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, including the essential omega 6 fatty acid, which has a positive effect on cholesterol levels. In addition, sesame has a high percentage of protein of around 20% as well as lecithin, which is an important component of our brain and nerve cells. Sesame, however, stands out particularly due to its high calcium content.
